What Winter Workwear to Buy for HGV Drivers, Workshops and Fleet Managers

|Published: 25 September 2026|7 min read

Cold weather exposes bad kit fast, so don’t get caught out. If you are looking for workwear that will survive those cold, dark winter months, you’re in the right place. At Truckstop Group, we have put together our top recommendations for every scenario. Keep reading to learn more…

For the long-haul driver

Drivers don't always need the full outdoor kit, especially when they’re behind the wheel. They need layers that go on and off fast for short bursts outside the cab and gloves that still work on a phone or touchscreen. These are our top recommendations:

Fort Thermal Long Johns / Fort Thermal Long Sleeve Vest

Brushed 50/50 polycotton base layers with an elasticated waist, built to trap warmth without adding bulk under a uniform, there’s a reason why Long Johns are the go-to solution. The Long Johns have a front opening for convenience, and the vest layers just as well under a shirt as it does under a jacket.

Great for: the first line of defence on early starts.

Tuffstuff Touch Screen Glove

Seamless and breathable, with a touchscreen-compatible thumb and index finger so a driver can check a delivery app or take a call without stopping to peel a glove off. The elasticated wrist keeps draughts out without restricting movement at the pump or the tail lift.

Great for: checking a phone or touchscreen without taking gloves off in the cold.

Tuffstuff Winter Bundle

A one-size neckwarmer, hat and pair of gloves in a single box, made from soft 230gsm microfleece and machine washable for repeat use through the season. It's an easy line to keep as a spare in the cab door pocket rather than juggling three separate items.

Great for: the full warm package.

Fort Breckland Bodywarmer

A 320gsm softshell bodywarmer with 4% elastane for stretch, fleece lined and windproof, cut to stay agile in confined spaces rather than bulk you out. It sits well over a uniform jacket for the walk round the trailer without pinning your arms to your sides.

Great for: throwing on over the uniform for a quick walk-round without restricting your arms.

For the workshop crew

In the colder months, workshop conditions swing fast. One minute you’re cold when standing still, then warm the next moment while working. The right kit handles both without you having to strip a layer off mid-job. Here are our top recommendations:

Fort Padded Boilersuit

240gsm poly-cotton with a quilted lining, a zip front and an elasticated action back that gives you room to crouch or reach without the seams pulling. Side access and zipped chest pockets mean you're not stripping the whole thing off just to get into a trouser pocket underneath.

Great for: general workshop grafting through the coldest months, where you're in and out of it all day.

Fort Flex Coverall

Waterproof to 10,000mm with fully welded seams rather than stitched ones, so water can't creep in at the joins the way it does on cheaper coveralls. The adjustable hood, sleeves and trouser hems seal you in properly, which matters if you're pressure-washing a bay rather than just standing in light rain.

Great for: pressure-washing bays or working under a vehicle in standing water.

Tuffstuff Hatton Jacket / Tuffstuff Snape Jacket

Both pair a ThermoFort-padded core (130gsm on the Hatton, ripstop-backed on the Snape) with softshell panels at the shoulders and sleeves, so the torso stays warm while your arms keep full range of movement for reaching into an engine bay. The Hatton adds a hood for moving between workshop and yard; the Snape drops it for a closer, more hybrid cut.

Great for: reaching into an engine bay without the jacket fighting you.

Tuffstuff Pro Work Gloves

CE certified with padded palms and knuckles plus reinforced stitching at the stress points, built to survive daily contact with tools and sharp edges rather than just keeping hands warm. The fit stays close enough that you don't lose the dexterity needed for small fixings.

Great for: grip and dexterity on small fixings, not just warmth.

If the job involves welding or grinding, check EN ISO 11611 on the label before you buy. Class 1 covers baseline protection for MMA and gas welding (7 or more seconds of radiant heat resistance, 15 or more molten metal droplets); Class 2 covers higher-risk MIG, MAG and plasma cutting (16 or more seconds, 25 or more droplets). It's chosen by the process, not the season, and it isn't the same certification as a standard boilersuit.

For roadside and yard workers

Anyone working near live traffic needs EN ISO 20471, the current hi-vis standard. Class 2 requires at least 0.50m² of fluorescent background material and 0.13m² of reflective tape. Class 3, the higher rating, requires 0.80m² and 0.20m², and it's the one to choose for roadside work or low light. This is what we recommend:

Hi Vis Motorway Jacket

Full jacket length with taped seams, a quilted lining and a two-way zip, built to be worn for hours rather than minutes at a time. The extra length covers more of the body than a standard hi-vis jacket, which matters if you're standing still in the cold rather than moving to stay warm.

Great for: standing at the roadside for an extended stretch.

Hi Vis Bomber Jacket

The same Class 3 visibility and weatherproofing as the Motorway Jacket, but cut shorter with an elasticated waist and cuffs, so it doesn't hold you back when you're moving between vehicles or directing traffic in the yard.

Great for: active yard work like directing vehicles or handling loads.

Fort Air Reflex Jacket / Fort Air Reflex Trouser

Waterproof to 6,000mm and breathable to 2,000mvp on top of its hi-vis rating, the combination to reach for when the job is standing still in the rain rather than working hard enough to generate your own heat. Jacket and trouser share identical ratings, so wearing both together gives head-to-toe protection rather than a warm top half and soaked legs.

Great for: standing still in foul weather rather than working up a sweat.

Hi Vis Vest

A Velcro-front vest that goes on in seconds over any other layer, rated Class 2 rather than the higher Class 3 of a full jacket. It won't replace proper hi-vis outerwear for extended roadside work, but it's the one worth keeping in every vehicle.

Great for: anyone who needs visibility now, not a full jacket.

Tuffstuff Reflective Thinsulate Beanie

Fluorescent yellow Thinsulate with a reflective stripe round the cuff, so visibility doesn't disappear the moment a hood goes up in bad weather. The fleece lining means it does the job as headwear in its own right, not just as a hi-vis add-on.

Great for: staying visible once a hood goes up.

For the fleet manager

Kitting out a team means consistency across the board and knowing what you're legally required to provide. Since 6 April 2022, the Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations extended employer PPE duties to limb (b) workers, meaning anyone doing casual or irregular work for you under a contract for services, not just direct employees.

If you use agency or casual drivers over winter, you now have the same duty to provide suitable PPE free of charge, keep it maintained, and give proper instruction on its use, whether or not that person is formally on your payroll. These are our top recommendations:

Fort Deben Safety Boot / Fort Blyth Safety Boot

Both carry a steel toe cap, anti-penetration midsole and TPU toe guard under a full-grain waterproof leather upper, with a padded collar and comfort insoles for anyone on their feet all day. The Blyth uses a honey nubuck leather and carries the newer EN ISO 20345:2022 certification; the Deben carries the 2011 revision at a lower price point.

Great for: standard-issue footwear across a team working outdoors or in the yard.

Fort Workforce Safety Boot

A steel toe cap and steel anti-penetration midsole under a tough leather upper, with a dual-density PU sole for grip on wet or oily floors. It's the boot to specify when you need to fit out a larger team without stretching the budget on every pair.

Great for: covering a bigger team at a lower cost per pair, without cutting the protection that actually matters.

Tuffstuff Winter Bundle

Hat, neckwarmer and gloves as a single SKU, which comes in handy when you're placing one order for a team of people. It's machine washable, so it holds up as a repeat-issue item rather than something replaced every few weeks.

Great for: a fast, low-admin add to a bulk order.

Fort Melrose Fleece Jacket

300gsm anti-pill polyester fleece with a smooth outer finish built to carry an embroidered logo cleanly, plus two zipped side pockets and an adjustable hem for a consistent fit across different builds. It cleans up well too, which matters when you're issuing the same jacket to an entire team.

Great for: a consistent, branded look across the team without the bulk of a full jacket.
