Propshaft end yokes: identification and replacement

The propshaft end yoke is the forged component that attaches the propshaft to the gearbox output or differential input. It carries the universal joint bearing cups and transmits the full drive torque of the vehicle. Yoke failure is less common than universal joint failure, but yokes do wear at the bearing cup bores and can crack from severe shock loading.

Identifying the correct yoke requires the yoke design (flange or slip type), the bearing cup hole diameter and spacing, the journal cross size, and the flange bolt pattern or spline specification. On slip yokes, worn splines allow fore-aft movement in the shaft, which is felt as a thump on drive/overrun transitions.

How do I identify which propshaft end yoke fits my HGV?

Measure the bearing cup bore diameter and the distance between cup centres on the yoke legs (the journal cross dimensions). For a flange yoke, also record the flange bolt pattern and PCD. For a slip yoke, record the spline count. Cross-reference these measurements against the OE part number from the original yoke if it is still legible.

Can worn yoke bearing cup bores be repaired?

Yoke bearing cup bores that have worn or become oval cannot be reliably repaired at workshop level. Replacement is the correct approach. A bearing cup running in a worn bore will fail quickly regardless of whether the bearing itself is new.

Do I need to balance the propshaft after fitting a new end yoke?

If the yoke is replaced like-for-like and the shaft is not disturbed, rebalancing is not normally required. If the shaft has been disassembled and the yoke phasing changed, or if there is any doubt about shaft balance, a rebalance is advisable before running at road speed.
