Bearing pullers and specialist vehicle tools for HGV workshops

Bearing and gear pullers are essential for commercial vehicle axle, drivetrain and engine work where components are press-fit onto shafts or in housings and cannot be removed without applying controlled pulling force. Two-leg and three-leg puller sets cover the majority of general applications from small bearing races up to large hub and gear applications. Capacity and reach are the key selection criteria; confirm the OD of the component to be pulled and the depth of the puller's jaw travel against the component dimensions before selecting a set.

Slide hammers are used for pulling bearings from blind housings where a conventional puller cannot get behind the component, and for removing wheel studs, axle seals and bush housings. Internal bearing pullers or collet-type extractors are required for bearings seated in housings that cannot be reached from the back. Hub pullers for commercial vehicle applications need to accommodate the larger hub bolt circles found on HGV axles.

What size bearing puller do I need for HGV axle work?

HGV axle bearings are significantly larger than those found in passenger vehicle applications. Trailer wheel bearings typically run on 70-80mm diameter stub axles. A puller set with a maximum spread of at least 250mm and a jaw depth sufficient to clear the bearing race is required for most trailer hub work. For drive axle bearings on truck rear axles, larger capacity sets or dedicated hub pullers may be needed.

What is a slide hammer used for in a commercial vehicle workshop?

A slide hammer uses an inertia weight driven along a central shaft to generate an impact pulling force. Common applications include removing bearing races from blind housings, pulling wheel studs, extracting seals from housings, and removing ball joints or bush housings that are too deep for a conventional puller. Adaptor sets extend the range of applications a single slide hammer can cover.

Can I use a standard puller set for removing truck wheel hub bearings?

Standard puller sets rated for light vehicle use may not have sufficient capacity or jaw spread for HGV hub bearings. Check the puller's rated capacity against the bearing dimensions and forces involved. Using an undersized puller risks damaging the tool or the bearing housing. For heavy-duty applications, a purpose-made hub puller with adequate capacity is the correct choice.
