Trailer Electrical Connections for Commercial Vehicles
The electrical connection between a truck and trailer carries lighting, ABS, TPMS and auxiliary power signals that are essential for safe and legal operation. A reliable trailer connection is one of the most inspected items at roadside checks, and a worn or damaged connector is a common cause of inspection failures. Truckstop stocks trailer electrical connectors, plugs, sockets and suzy cables for the full range of commercial vehicle applications.
Trailer Plug Standards: 7-Pin and 15-Pin Connections
There are two main connector standards for truck-trailer electrical connections. The 7-pin ISO 1185 connector handles the basic lighting circuit. The 15-pin ISO 12098 connector carries additional circuits for ABS, load sensing, TPMS and auxiliary power. Most modern articulated trucks use the 15-pin connector as the primary connection. Older vehicles and some rigid truck-trailer combinations may use the 7-pin type alone or in combination.
What is the difference between a 7-pin and 15-pin trailer connector?
The 7-pin connector (ISO 1185) carries the basic lighting circuit: left and right indicators, stop lights, tail lights, reversing light, earth and a spare or auxiliary circuit. The 15-pin connector (ISO 12098) carries all of the 7-pin circuits plus ABS signal wires, TPMS, additional auxiliary power and other electronic circuits. Most modern tractor units use 15-pin as standard.
How often should suzy cables and trailer sockets be replaced?
Suzy cables and trailer sockets should be inspected at every service and replaced when signs of wear, corrosion, cracked insulation or damaged connector pins are found. Regular greasing of the connector pins with a suitable electrical grease extends service life, particularly on vehicles operating in wet or salty environments. Do not wait for a connector failure on the road before replacing a worn suzy.
Do you stock both male and female trailer connector types?
Yes. Truckstop stocks both male (plug) and female (socket) connector types in 7-pin and 15-pin formats, as well as complete suzy cable assemblies and individual connector housings and pins for those building custom cable assemblies.
