    Choosing the right brake tools for HGV disc brake service

    Wind-back tools are the most frequently used item in HGV brake servicing. On disc brake callipers with threaded pistons, the piston must be wound back rather than simply pushed, and using the wrong tool or a makeshift approach risks damaging the piston face or the caliper bore. A proper wind-back set with the correct adaptor pins covers most HGV applications without issue.

    For air disc brake systems, which are standard fitment on most modern HGVs, you will need a set rated for the larger piston diameters used on commercial vehicle callipers. The same tool used for car brake servicing will not generate enough torque for HGV applications and may strip the piston slots.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What brake tools do I need to service HGV disc brakes?

    The minimum requirement for a disc brake service on an HGV is a caliper wind-back tool with adaptors sized for commercial vehicle pistons, a torque wrench, and a brake piston separator if the caliper needs to be removed entirely. For air disc brake systems, confirm the piston diameter before selecting a wind-back tool, as commercial vehicle pistons are larger than those on passenger cars.

    Can I use a car brake wind-back tool on an HGV?

    Not reliably. HGV caliper pistons are larger in diameter and require more torque to wind back. A car-rated tool may strip the piston drive slots before completing the job. Use a wind-back set rated for commercial vehicle applications.

    Do I need different tools for drum brakes and disc brakes?

    Yes. Drum brake service requires spring compressors and shoe-spreading tools specific to the adjuster type and drum size in use. Disc brake service requires wind-back tooling. Most HGVs built after 2010 use disc brakes on at least the front axle, with many running discs on all axles.
