Truck and trailer brake discs at Truckstop Group

Commercial vehicle brake discs wear faster than passenger car equivalents because of the loads involved. An HGV steer axle disc is absorbing braking energy from a vehicle that may be 44 tonnes gross. Discs that are worn below minimum thickness, cracked, or warped from thermal stress must be replaced before the annual test — and in practice, long before that to maintain safe stopping distances and avoid accelerated pad wear.

Winnard is the brake disc brand throughout this range, covering truck and trailer axle applications across the major European makes. Volvo coverage includes FH, FM, FL and FE series with vented disc VO1071 and solid variant VO1071K. Renault C and T series use the same Winnard disc references as Volvo on shared axle applications. Iveco EuroTrakker is covered by IV1064. Schmitz Cargobull trailer axles are covered by SCH1001. Several disc variants include an integral ABS ring; product listings specify where this applies.

Discs must be replaced as matched axle pairs: fitting a new disc against a worn one causes uneven braking. New brake pads should also be fitted at the same time — bedding new pads onto a worn disc degrades both components. Matching Winnard brake pads are listed in our truck brake pads collection. Fitting kits with hub bolts, retaining plates and seals are available separately. Heavier discs may incur pallet delivery charges. UK nationwide delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace brake discs in pairs?

Yes, always as matched pairs across the axle. Fitting a new disc on one side against a worn disc on the other causes uneven braking response and can pull the vehicle under heavy braking, particularly in emergency stops with a loaded trailer.

What is the difference between vented and solid brake discs?

Vented discs have internal channels between the two disc faces that allow air circulation, improving heat dissipation. They are used on steer and drive axles with higher thermal loads. Solid discs are used on lower-demand applications such as trailing axles. Always replace like-for-like unless a specific engineering change is being made.

When should pads be replaced along with discs?

Always when fitting new discs. A new pad bedded onto a worn disc does not make full contact across the friction surface, reducing effectiveness and generating heat unevenly. Similarly, old pads on new discs will score the disc surface and accelerate wear. Replace both together.
