Brake pad selection on commercial vehicles is more involved than on passenger cars. Calipers, brake systems and axle types vary by manufacturer and model year, and using an incorrect pad can cause uneven wear, reduced braking efficiency or caliper damage. Getting the right part matters.
Winnard brake pads form the core of our range. All Winnard pads carry ECE R90 approval, the mandatory standard for brake friction materials used on vehicles above 3.5 tonnes. They are supplied in sets of four identical pads to ensure even braking across the axle, and many variants include a fitting kit in the box. Coverage includes applications across Meritor ELSA 225-1 and 225-3, Knorr SB and SN7 (ProTecS), Wabco PAN22 and MAX22T, Haldex ModulT, and SAF/Sauer disc brake systems.
TMD brake pads (supplied under the Don brand) are manufactured by Nisshinbo Group, one of the world's largest brake friction material producers, and are used as OE equipment by major truck manufacturers. The range covers Meritor ELSA 225-3 fitments for Volvo, Renault and other makes.
Textar friction materials are also stocked for specific applications, providing further coverage for Wabco PAN22 and related caliper types.
Pads must be replaced as axle sets to maintain balanced braking. Where fitting kits are not included with the pad, compatible Winnard WA-series kits are available separately, see our brake pad & disc fitting kits collection. Wear indicator leads are stocked in a range of connector types, see our brake pad wear indicators collection.
All brake pads are available for UK nationwide delivery. For full delivery options, see our orders and delivery page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ECE R90 approval mean for brake pads?
ECE R90 is the European regulatory standard that brake friction materials must meet for use on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. It governs friction performance, consistency and thermal stability. All Winnard pads in our range carry this approval.
Do I need to match the brake pad to the caliper type?
Yes. Brake pad geometry is specific to the caliper. A pad designed for a Meritor ELSA 225-3 will not fit a Knorr SB caliper. Product listings include the compatible brake system to make identification straightforward.
Should I replace brake pads in pairs or full axle sets?
Always replace as a full axle set, four pads covering both sides of the axle. This maintains even braking force and prevents the vehicle pulling to one side under braking.
Are fitting kits included with Winnard brake pads?
Many Winnard pads are supplied with a fitting kit. The product listing will state which kit is included or available. Kits contain the hardware needed for correct installation and are also sold separately.
Can I use any brake pad on a trailer axle?
No. Trailer axle brake systems vary, SAF, BPW and Haldex axles each require specific pad profiles. Check the brake system listed on the product page against your trailer axle specification.
