Air ratchets for commercial vehicle workshops

Air ratchets are one of the most frequently used tools in a commercial vehicle workshop, providing fast, low-torque fastener removal and installation in confined spaces where an impact wrench cannot fit or generate too much torque. The 3/8 inch drive air ratchet is the most common size for general engine and cab work; the 1/2 inch drive provides more torque for slightly larger fasteners. Quarter-inch drive ratchets are used for small fasteners and sensor work.

Air ratchet speed and torque output vary between models. For most workshop applications, a tool producing 60-80 Nm of torque at 90 psi with a free speed of 150-200 RPM is sufficient for general bolt removal and installation. Tools at the higher end of this range handle seized or corroded fasteners better without switching to a breaker bar. What size drive air ratchet do I need for HGV work?

A 3/8 inch drive air ratchet covers the majority of engine, cab and electrical work on HGVs where a standard socket is needed in a confined space. A 1/2 inch drive is more appropriate for larger fasteners on suspension, drivetrain and chassis components. Most commercial vehicle workshops have both sizes available, as the range of fastener sizes encountered across different systems is wide.

How much air pressure does an air ratchet need?

Most air ratchets are rated for operation at 90 psi (6.2 bar). Running below this pressure reduces torque and speed. Confirm your compressor and air line deliver adequate pressure at the tool, particularly in long or small-bore hose runs that can cause a pressure drop from the regulator setting to the tool inlet.

Are air ratchets suitable for wheel nut removal on trucks?

No. Air ratchets do not produce sufficient torque for HGV wheel nuts, which require 550-650 Nm or more depending on the axle specification. A 1 inch or 3/4 inch drive impact wrench is the correct tool for HGV wheel nuts. Air ratchets are for lower-torque fasteners in confined spaces, not high-torque structural fasteners.
