HGV clutch cover replacement: when to replace it and what to check
The clutch cover assembly contains the pressure plate, the diaphragm spring or coil springs, and the release mechanism. Pressure plates wear primarily at the friction surface where the disc contacts the plate. They can also fail through spring fatigue, which reduces clamping force and causes slipping under load, or through heat damage from a worn or slipping disc left in service too long.
On most HGV gearbox-out clutch replacements, replacing the full clutch kit including the cover, disc, and release bearing is the right call. The labour to remove the gearbox is the same regardless of whether one or three components are replaced. Check the flywheel face for heat cracks and scoring before fitting any new clutch assembly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I replace the clutch cover and disc together, or can I replace them separately?
When the gearbox is out, replace the full clutch kit including cover, disc, and release bearing. The additional parts cost is small relative to the labour already committed, and fitting new components to a partially worn assembly shortens service life.
Can a clutch cover be machined rather than replaced?
Pressure plate surfaces on HGV clutch covers can be machined if within the minimum thickness specification. In practice, the cost of machining relative to a replacement unit makes this worthwhile only where the replacement part is expensive or has a long lead time.
How do I identify which clutch cover fits my HGV?
The cover is specified by flywheel diameter, the number of mounting bolts, the release mechanism type, and the vehicle make and model. Cross-reference the OE part number from the existing cover, or call us on 01527 598 000 with the chassis number.
Does Truckstop Group stock clutch covers for all HGV makes?
We stock clutch covers and full clutch kits for DAF, Scania, Volvo, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Iveco, and Renault. Call us if you need to confirm availability for a specific application.
