Collection: Rod Ends (18)

Replacement rod ends for HGV and commercial vehicle steering and linkage applications. Rod ends, also known as rose joints or heim joints, are used at the end of track rods, drag links, torque rods, and other linkage assemblies to provide a pivoting, adjustable connection. Correct thread direction and shank diameter must be confirmed before ordering. Parts are stocked for a range of HGV applications. Next-day delivery to UK mainland. Same-day collection from our branches in Redditch, Worcester, Birmingham, and Evesham.

Rod ends for HGV steering and suspension linkage

Rod ends are load-bearing pivot joints used at the ends of steering rods and suspension linkages. The ball inside the housing allows angular movement in multiple planes, which accommodates the geometry changes as the wheels steer and the suspension moves. Unlike a standard spherical bearing, a rod end has a threaded shank that screws into the rod and is secured with a locknut, which makes them adjustable for length.

The thread specification matters. HGV rod ends use metric thread in left and right-hand forms, and the two ends of a track rod or drag link are often handed differently so that the length can be adjusted by rotating the rod. Fitting two same-handed ends means the rod cannot be adjusted. Check the thread direction on the existing rod end before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify the correct rod end for my HGV?

You need the shank thread size (diameter and pitch), the thread hand (left or right), the body size, and the load rating. These are usually stamped on the existing rod end or available from the chassis parts list. If the existing end is too corroded to read, measure the thread and body dimensions directly.

What is the difference between a left-hand and right-hand thread rod end?

A right-hand thread tightens clockwise; a left-hand thread tightens anticlockwise. On many HGV steering rods, both ends are used together: one right-hand, one left-hand. This allows the rod length to be adjusted by rotating the tube without unscrewing either end.

Should rod ends be greased on an HGV?

Sealed for life rod ends require no maintenance. Greasable rod ends have a nipple and should be lubricated at the manufacturer's specified interval. Using grease in a sealed joint serves no purpose and can displace the factory lubricant.

Are rod ends a DVSA annual test item?

Yes. Wear or excessive movement in steering linkage joints, including rod ends, is a failure point at annual test. Inspect all rod ends as part of the pre-test check and replace any that show perceptible play in the joint.
