Selecting the right socket set for HGV and commercial vehicle work

HGV and commercial vehicle work places different demands on sockets than car mechanics. Fastener sizes are larger — wheel nuts on heavy axles commonly run at 33mm AF, and suspension and drivetrain fixings can reach 36mm or beyond on certain chassis. The torque requirements are also higher, which means socket wall thickness and material grade matter more.

For 1/2-inch drive work, a set covering 8mm to 32mm handles the majority of general HGV maintenance tasks. Deep sockets are useful for wheel studs, injector holders, and any application where a nut is recessed or a long extension is needed for access. For high-torque work — wheel nuts, kingpins, and heavy drivetrain fixings — 3/4-inch drive sockets provide greater strength and reduce the risk of socket cracking under load.

Impact sockets are a separate consideration. Standard chrome vanadium sockets should not be used with air or electric impact wrenches. Impact-rated sockets are made from softer, tougher steel that absorbs the shock loads from an impact mechanism without cracking. If you are using an impact gun for wheel nut removal or drivetrain work, use impact-rated sockets throughout.

Extension bars and universal joints are worth buying alongside the socket set. Restricted access on cab-over designs and engine compartments on modern Euro 6 trucks makes extensions a frequent requirement rather than an occasional one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size sockets do I need for HGV wheel nuts?

Most HGV wheel nuts use a 33mm AF socket. Some older or non-standard axle configurations use 32mm or 36mm. Check the specification for your specific axle before purchasing. Always use a torque wrench rated to the manufacturer's specification — HGV wheel nut torque typically runs from 450 Nm to over 600 Nm depending on the axle type.

What is the difference between shallow and deep sockets?

Shallow sockets have a short internal depth, suitable for nuts and bolts where the thread does not protrude significantly beyond the nut face. Deep sockets have an extended internal cavity and are used where the bolt protrudes through the nut, or where the fastener is recessed inside a housing. For wheel studs and injector work on HGVs, deep sockets are frequently needed.

Should I buy a set or individual sockets?

A set is more cost-effective if you need comprehensive coverage from the start. Individual sockets are the better choice when you already have a set and need to add a specific size, or when you need an impact-rated version of a size you already own in standard form. Most working workshops eventually carry both.

Can I use metric sockets on AF fasteners?

Metric and AF (across flats) are different measurement systems. Using a metric socket on an AF fastener, or vice versa, risks rounding the corners of the fastener, particularly on seized or corroded fixings. Always match the socket to the fastener measurement system specified for your vehicle.
