Automotive air conditioning training for vehicle technicians

Working on vehicle air conditioning systems in the UK requires F-Gas certification under EU Regulation 517/2014, retained in UK law post-Brexit. Technicians who handle fluorinated greenhouse gases - including the R134a and R1234yf refrigerants used in vehicle air conditioning systems - must hold the relevant certification. Handling refrigerant without the correct certification is a regulatory offence.

F-Gas certification for vehicle air conditioning is achieved through an accredited assessment. Tec-Stop's air conditioning training prepares technicians for this assessment and covers the practical skills needed for daily air conditioning work: system diagnosis, pressure testing, leak detection, refrigerant recovery and recharge, and component replacement.

With R1234yf now fitted as standard on most new vehicles, training on this refrigerant's specific handling requirements - including its mild flammability classification - is essential for any workshop servicing modern vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Is F-Gas certification required to work on vehicle air conditioning systems?

Yes. Under the F-Gas Regulations, technicians handling fluorinated refrigerants - including R134a and R1234yf - must hold the relevant certification. The certification is specific to vehicle air conditioning (Category I under the regulations). Operating without the correct certification is a regulatory offence and creates liability for the employing workshop.

What does the air conditioning training course cover?

The course covers the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicle air conditioning: system components and operation, refrigerant types and properties (R134a and R1234yf), safe handling and F-Gas regulatory requirements, system diagnosis, pressure testing, leak detection, refrigerant recovery, recycling and recharge, and component replacement.

How long is the air conditioning training course?

Course duration varies by format and provider. Contact our Tec-Stop team for current course schedules, duration, and assessment arrangements.

Does the course cover R1234yf as well as R134a?

Yes. With R1234yf now standard fitment on most vehicles manufactured from 2017 onwards, both refrigerant types are covered in the training. R1234yf handling has specific additional requirements due to its A2L flammability classification, and these are covered as part of the course content.
