HGV cab corner panel replacement
Corner panels on cab-over trucks take more incidental damage than almost any other external component. They project beyond the main cab profile at the front and rear lower corners, making them vulnerable during reversing manoeuvres, tight yard work, and parking in confined spaces. A cracked or missing corner panel leaves the cab structure underneath exposed to moisture ingress and is a bodywork defect under DVSA inspection criteria.
Most modern HGV corner panels are moulded plastic components fixed to the cab frame with a combination of bolts, push-fit clips, and locating studs. Fitting a replacement is a straightforward job on most cab designs — remove the damaged panel, transfer any retained hardware, and fit the new unit. On some makes the corner panel is integrated with the step assembly or the lower door sill, which affects what you need to remove before the panel releases.
Corner panel fitment is cab-specific. On the DAF CF and XF, the corner panel configuration changed between the Euro 5 and Euro 6 versions of the cab. On Scania R and P series, the corner panel is different between the low, normal, and high-roof cab variants. Always confirm the cab variant and year when ordering.
Panels are typically supplied in primer. If a colour-matched finish is required, the standard approach is to paint to the vehicle's colour code after fitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cracked truck corner panel a roadworthiness issue?
A cracked or insecure corner panel that presents a sharp edge or a risk of falling from the vehicle is a roadworthiness defect. It will be noted at DVSA annual test and can result in a minor or major failure depending on severity. Replace cracked or insecure panels before the annual test.
How do I identify the correct corner panel for my truck?
Corner panel fitment is specific to make, model, cab variant, and year. On DAF and Scania, fitment changes across model generations. The most reliable method is to use the OE part number from the damaged panel or provide the chassis number. Call us on 01527 598 000 if you need fitment confirmation before ordering.
Can corner panels be repaired rather than replaced?
Minor surface cracks in plastic panels can be repaired with plastic welding or adhesive repair kits, provided the mounting points and locating studs are intact. If the panel is split across a mounting hole or has lost significant material, replacement is more reliable. Repaired panels may not pass a close DVSA inspection if the repair is visible and the structural integrity is in question.
Do corner panels come painted?
Most replacement corner panels are supplied in primer. Painted panels are available for some applications on request. For a colour-matched finish, fit the panel in primer and paint to the vehicle's colour code.
