Replacing HGV front grilles
The front grille on a modern cab-over HGV does more than direct airflow. It protects the radiator from stone strike and road debris, contributes to the aerodynamic profile of the front end, and on some makes integrates with the bumper assembly as a structural panel. A missing or severely damaged grille leaves the cooling system exposed and can affect air flow to the intercooler and radiator, which on high-mileage motorway running can contribute to overheating.
Most HGV front grilles are moulded plastic, fixed to the cab front panel by clips, screws, or a combination of both. Replacement is typically a straightforward job — unclip or unscrew the damaged grille, fit the new one in its place. On some cab designs, particularly Scania R and S series, the grille is integrated with or sits adjacent to the cab's upper front panel and headlamp surrounds, which affects the removal sequence.
Grille fitment is highly model-specific. On DAF XF models, the grille configuration differs between the Euro 5 and Euro 6 versions of the cab. On Volvo FH, the grille assembly varies across the FH3, FH4, and FH5 cab generations. Always confirm the model year and cab generation when ordering, rather than just the model designation.
Some grilles are available painted or primed. For painted grilles, confirm the paint code for the vehicle if colour matching is required, though most operators fit the grille in primer and respray if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a missing truck grille cause overheating?
A missing grille reduces the directed airflow to the radiator and intercooler at low speeds and increases the risk of stone strike damage to radiator cores at all speeds. On its own, a missing grille is unlikely to cause overheating during motorway running where ram air is sufficient, but at low speeds in warm conditions the reduced air management will affect cooling efficiency. Replace missing grilles promptly.
How do I identify the correct grille for my truck?
Grille fitment varies by make, model, year of manufacture, and cab variant. On DAF and Scania in particular, the grille configuration changes between model generations. Use the OE part number from the old grille or provide the chassis number. If in doubt, call us on 01527 598 000 before ordering.
Can I fit a replacement grille myself?
On most HGV applications, grille replacement is a clip-and-screw job requiring basic hand tools and is within the capability of a competent technician. Some designs require partial bumper or headlamp surround removal for access. Check the removal sequence for your specific cab before starting.
Are truck grilles available unpainted?
Most replacement grilles are supplied unpainted or in primer. Painted grilles are available for some applications. If you need a colour-matched finish, the standard approach is to fit the grille in primer and have it painted to the vehicle's colour code at a bodyshop.
