Replacing HGV headlamp housings
The headlamp housing on an HGV does more than protect the bulb or LED unit. It contains the reflector that shapes the beam and the lens that distributes light onto the road ahead. A cracked lens allows moisture ingress, which causes condensation inside the housing and accelerates reflector degradation. A yellowed or opaque lens scatters light and reduces effective range, which is both a safety issue and a roadworthiness failure.
Modern HGV headlamp assemblies are increasingly complex. Euro 6-era trucks from DAF, Scania, Volvo, and Renault use integrated LED or xenon units with built-in level adjusters and sometimes auto-levelling actuators. On these systems, the housing, lens, and lamp unit are often a sealed assembly rather than separate serviceable components. Before ordering a replacement, confirm whether the housing can be replaced independently or whether the entire headlamp assembly is required.
On older vehicles with replaceable bulbs, the housing typically contains a removable reflector bowl. If the reflector itself is damaged or silver has flaked, the housing replacement is necessary even if the lens is intact — a degraded reflector produces a scattered beam that will fail the headlamp aim check at DVSA annual test.
Headlamp fitment is highly model and year-specific. On DAF XF, the headlamp assembly changed significantly between the euro 5 and Euro 6 versions, and between facelift variants within the Euro 6 range. Always confirm the model year and variant before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cracked headlamp housing an annual test failure?
Yes. A cracked headlamp lens or housing that allows moisture ingress, affects the beam pattern, or shows visible damage to the reflector is a defect at DVSA annual test. Headlamp condition and aim are assessed as part of the lighting check. Replace cracked or moisture-damaged housings before presenting for test.
Can I replace just the headlamp lens or do I need the full housing?
On many older HGVs, the lens is bonded to the housing and cannot be replaced independently. On some models, a lens-only replacement is available. On modern integrated LED or xenon units, the assembly is typically sealed and must be replaced as a complete unit. Check the fitment details for your specific make and model before ordering.
What causes condensation inside a headlamp housing?
Condensation forms when moisture enters the housing through a crack or failed seal, then condenses on the colder lens surface. Low levels of condensation that clear during running are often caused by the vent tube becoming blocked rather than a seal failure. Persistent or heavy condensation that does not clear indicates a crack or a failed seal, and the housing should be replaced.
Do I need to code or calibrate a replacement headlamp?
On vehicles with auto-levelling headlamps — common on Euro 6-era trucks — the replacement unit may require calibration via a diagnostic tool after fitting to set the levelling actuator baseline. Check the fitment notes for your specific application. On older vehicles with manual adjuster screws, headlamp aim can be set with a beam tester after fitting.
