Rear Fog Lamps for Commercial Vehicles
A functioning rear fog lamp is a legal requirement on all road vehicles in the UK. On trucks and trailers, the rear fog lamp must be positioned to give maximum visibility during adverse weather conditions. Rear Fog Lamp Requirements for Trucks and Trailers
Rear fog lamps on trucks and trailers are subject to ECE Regulation 38, which specifies the photometric performance, mounting height and visibility angles required for type approval. How many rear fog lamps are required on an HGV or trailer?
UK and EU regulations require a minimum of one rear fog lamp and a maximum of two on a single vehicle. On articulated vehicles with trailer, the trailer must have its own rear fog lamp connected to the tractor unit's fog light circuit. The lamp must be mounted between 250mm and 1000mm from the ground and clearly visible from the rear.
What is the correct bulb type for a rear fog lamp?
Most conventional rear fog lamps use P21W (BA15S) or P21/5W bulbs in 21W rating. LED replacement versions are available that draw significantly less current while providing equivalent or greater light output. Confirm the cap type and voltage rating of the existing lamp before ordering a replacement; 24V versions are required for most HGVs and trailers.
Can I replace just the lens on a rear fog lamp assembly?
On many lamp assemblies, the lens can be replaced separately from the housing. This is a cost-effective repair option where the housing is undamaged but the lens has been cracked or yellowed.
