Work outerwear: what to consider when kitting out a team

The most important variable when selecting work outerwear is the working environment. Workshop staff working inside need something different from yard operatives, drivers getting in and out of cabs, or roadside workers with visibility requirements. Getting the spec wrong means kit that is either too heavy and restrictive for the job, or not warm or waterproof enough to be useful.

For outdoor workers near traffic, EN ISO 20471 Class 2 or Class 3 hi-vis outerwear is the standard. Class 3 gives greater coverage and is appropriate for higher-risk environments. For yard and workshop use without a traffic proximity requirement, non-hi-vis options offer more variety in weight and cut.

Waterproof rating matters more than people often realise. A jacket described as water-resistant will shed light rain but soak through in sustained wet weather. Look for a confirmed hydrostatic head rating if the work involves extended outdoor exposure.
