Replacing truck cab steps
Truck cab steps take a significant amount of wear. Drivers climb in and out multiple times a day, steps are exposed to road spray, salt, and debris, and the mounting points on plastic step housings crack under repeated load over time. A step that has lost structural integrity or is visibly cracked is a roadworthiness concern — DVSA roadside and annual test inspectors check cab access fittings as part of the bodywork examination.
Steel step assemblies generally outlast plastic ones but are heavier and more prone to corrosion at the mounting bracket. Plastic step housings are lighter and corrosion-resistant but can become brittle with age, particularly on vehicles operating in cold climates or coastal environments where UV and salt accelerate degradation.
When ordering a replacement step, confirm the cab type, year of manufacture, and whether the step is a driver's side or passenger side unit — left-hand and right-hand steps are typically not interchangeable. On some makes, the step assembly is shared across multiple model years; on others, it is specific to a sub-variant of the cab. Cross-referencing the OE part number from the old step is the most reliable method.
Step rubber or grip inserts are also stocked separately for steps where the tread surface has worn but the housing is still sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are truck cab steps a roadworthiness item?
Yes. Damaged, missing, or insecure cab steps are flagged at DVSA annual test and roadside checks as a bodywork defect. A cracked or missing step can result in a minor or major failure depending on the severity, and a PG9 prohibition notice if the condition represents an immediate safety risk. Replace damaged steps promptly.
How do I know which step fits my truck?
The most reliable method is to cross-reference the OE part number from the existing step. Alternatively, provide the make, model, cab variant, and year of manufacture. For DAF and Scania in particular, step fitment can vary by cab generation and specification. If in doubt, call us on 01527 598 000 with the chassis number and we can confirm fitment.
Can I fit a truck step myself?
Step replacement on most HGV applications is a straightforward bolt-on job requiring basic hand tools. Access to the mounting bolts behind the step panel may require removal of a side trim or step housing cover on some cab designs. The work is within the capability of a competent workshop technician without specialist tooling.
Do you stock step rubbers and grip inserts separately?
Yes, tread inserts and grip rubbers are available separately for steps where the housing is intact but the tread surface has worn. If you only need the insert rather than the full assembly, check the listing or call us to confirm availability for your specific step type.
