HGV cab sunvisor replacement
A broken internal sunvisor in an HGV cab is a straightforward maintenance item, but a failed visor that cannot be held in position or drops unexpectedly during driving is a distraction and a safety concern. On a long-wheelbase vehicle operating at motorway speeds, unexpected glare from a low sun with a failed visor is a genuine hazard.
Internal sunvisors on HGV cabs are typically retained by a friction pivot and clip into a headlining bracket. Replacement is a simple unclip-and-refit job requiring no special tools. The main failure mode is the pivot losing its friction hold, either from wear or from the plastic housing cracking around the pivot boss. A visor that no longer holds its set position should be replaced rather than bent back into shape, as the plastic will not recover its clamping force.
External cab visors — the over-windscreen sunshade fitted above the windscreen on the exterior of the cab — are aerodynamic accessories on some specifications and structural fitments on others. Wind damage to external visors is the most common failure mode. If an external visor has cracked or a mounting bracket has broken, replace before the next long journey to avoid further damage at motorway speeds.
Confirm whether the sunvisor you need is the driver's side, passenger side, or a single centre-mounted unit before ordering. On most modern cabs these are separate components.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a broken internal sunvisor a roadworthiness issue?
A sunvisor that is completely missing is not in itself a DVSA annual test defect, but a broken visor with sharp edges that could injure the driver or a visor that cannot be secured in the raised position is a cab condition defect. Replace broken visors as part of routine cab maintenance.
How do I replace an internal HGV sunvisor?
Most internal sunvisors unclip from the headlining bracket and unscrew or unclip from the pivot arm. Fitting a replacement is the reverse procedure. The job typically requires no specialist tools and takes under 30 minutes. Confirm the fitment against the make, model, and year before ordering, as pivot designs vary.
Can external cab visors be repaired if cracked?
Minor surface cracks in the visor body can be stabilised with an appropriate plastic repair adhesive as a temporary measure. However, external visors are subject to significant aerodynamic load at motorway speed, and a cracked visor under load is likely to fail further. Replacement is more reliable than repair for external visors.
Do you stock sunvisors for all HGV makes?
We stock sunvisors for the main HGV makes including DAF, Scania, Volvo, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Iveco, and Renault. Availability varies by model and age. If you cannot find the visor you need in the listing, call us on 01527 598 000 with the chassis number and we can check availability or source it.
