What is the difference between a normally open and normally closed solenoid valve?
A normally closed solenoid valve blocks flow when no electrical signal is applied, and opens to allow flow when energised. A normally open valve allows flow in its de-energised state and closes when energised. The correct type depends on the fail-safe behaviour required by the system. Air suspension and gear selection systems typically use normally closed valves so the function is disabled if electrical power is lost.
What voltage solenoid valve do I need for an HGV?
Most HGV electrical systems operate on 24V DC, so solenoid valves for truck applications are 24V coil rated. Some auxiliary equipment and specialist installations use 12V. Confirm the system voltage before ordering, as fitting a 12V coil to a 24V supply will cause rapid coil failure.
Can a universal solenoid valve replace an OE component?
In many cases yes, providing the port size, thread, pressure rating, flow rate and voltage match the OE specification. Universal valves are most commonly used where the OE part is discontinued, expensive, or has a long lead time. For safety-critical systems such as air brakes, always confirm compatibility with the system specification before fitting a non-OE component.
