Replacing truck bumpers and fog lamp brackets

HGV bumpers are not purely cosmetic. The front bumper on a cab-over truck typically integrates the front towing point, fog lamp housings, air dam, and on some makes the lower cab access step. A cracked or missing bumper affects more than appearance — it exposes underlying cab structure, can affect aerodynamics, and on vehicles with integrated fog lamp brackets, leaves lighting components unsupported.

Bumper materials vary by make and cab type. Most modern HGV front bumpers are injection-moulded plastic with an integrated or bolt-on step section. Older vehicles may use steel bumpers. Plastic bumpers are lighter and will flex on minor impacts rather than deforming, but they crack on harder contact. Steel bumpers deform rather than crack, but corrosion is the long-term failure mode.

When ordering a replacement bumper, confirm the cab variant, year of manufacture, and whether the bumper is configured for factory-fitted fog lamps or is a plain lower section. On DAF CF and XF models, for example, bumper configuration varies by cab specification and model year. On Scania R and S series cabs, the lower front panel and bumper are different components with separate part numbers.

Fog lamp brackets are a simpler replacement. Most are retained by a small number of screws or push-fit clips into the bumper housing. If the bracket has broken away from the bumper but the bumper itself is sound, a bracket replacement avoids the cost of a full bumper assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a damaged truck bumper a roadworthiness issue?

A bumper that is cracked, insecure, or has sharp edges that could injure a pedestrian is a roadworthiness defect. DVSA annual test and roadside inspectors assess the condition of external body components. A bumper in poor condition can result in a minor defect or, if it presents a danger to others, a more serious finding. Replace damaged bumpers before the annual test.

Can I repair a cracked plastic truck bumper rather than replacing it?

Minor surface cracks in plastic bumpers can be repaired with plastic welding or bumper repair kits, provided the structural integrity and mounting points are not compromised. If the crack runs through a mounting hole, across a step section, or through the fog lamp housing area, replacement is the more reliable option. A repaired bumper in poor condition will not pass an annual test inspection.

How do I identify the correct bumper for my truck?

Bumper fitment on HGVs is make, model, cab variant, and year-specific. The most reliable method is to use the OE part number from the existing bumper or the chassis number to cross-reference the correct part. If in doubt, call us on 01527 598 000 and we can confirm the correct part before you order.

Do fog lamp brackets come with the lamps included?

No. Fog lamp brackets are structural components only. Replacement lamps are listed separately in our lighting range. If the lamp unit itself is damaged alongside the bracket, order both separately to complete the repair in one go.
