The 3462430101 is a type 24/30 double diaphragm spring brake for drum brake axles. The 24 is the service chamber size and the 30 the spring chamber size, so match both figures and the port layout to the unit coming off. The automatic slack adjusters are sold as a pair; they take up the clearance between shoe and drum as the linings wear, and they need setting up correctly when fitted. What does 24/30 mean on a Haldex spring brake?
The first number is the service chamber size and the second is the spring chamber size. Order the same size combination and port layout as the unit you are replacing, as a different size changes the braking force at that wheel.
How do I cage a spring brake before removing it?
Spring brakes have a release (caging) bolt that compresses the internal spring. Wind the bolt in until the spring is fully caged before disconnecting or removing the unit. Never dismantle a spring chamber: the spring holds enough stored energy to cause serious injury.
What is the difference between a service chamber and a spring brake?
A service chamber applies the brake when air is supplied from the foot valve. A spring brake also contains a powerful spring that applies the brake when air pressure is released, which gives the parking and secondary braking function. Spring brakes combine both chambers in one unit.
Do Haldex slack adjusters need setting up after fitting?
Yes. Automatic slack adjusters must be installed and set up to the manufacturer's instructions, or they will not adjust correctly as the linings wear. Replacing them as a pair on an axle keeps adjustment even from side to side.
