MAN truck specialist filters: hydraulic, AdBlue, transmission and coolant

MAN TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL trucks require several filter types beyond the standard engine oil, fuel and air elements depending on their specification and body configuration. MAN trucks fitted with ZF TraXon or MAN's own TipMatic automated gearbox require transmission fluid and filter changes at gearbox service intervals. Hydraulic filters are required on MAN trucks with hydraulic steering gear and on those fitted with PTO-driven hydraulic bodies.

Euro 6 MAN trucks with SCR systems require periodic replacement of the AdBlue dosing filter to maintain correct NOx reduction function. A failed or blocked AdBlue filter causes dosing faults and, if left unaddressed, triggers a derate condition. Coolant filters are fitted to MAN engines with spin-on coolant conditioner housings; these maintain correct inhibitor concentration in the cooling system and should be changed at the coolant flush interval.

Frequently asked questions

Does a MAN TGX with TipMatic need a transmission filter change?

Yes. MAN TipMatic and ZF TraXon gearboxes fitted to TGX and TGS models require transmission fluid and filter changes as specified in the gearbox maintenance schedule. This is separate from the engine oil service. Intervals are typically in the 150,000-300,000 km range. Using the correct approved transmission fluid for the gearbox type is essential.

How do I know if a MAN truck's AdBlue filter needs replacing?

Fault codes relating to SCR dosing pressure or flow will appear in the diagnostic system when the AdBlue filter becomes restricted. Dashboard warning lights associated with the exhaust aftertreatment system may also activate. Proactive replacement at the scheduled interval avoids fault conditions developing on the road.

Are hydraulic filters required on all MAN trucks?

Hydraulic filters are only required on MAN trucks fitted with hydraulic systems. This includes tippers, hook-loaders and crane-body vehicles with PTO-driven hydraulics, and trucks with hydraulic-assisted steering gear. Standard artic tractor units without body equipment typically do not require a separate hydraulic filter beyond the power steering system, which has its own filter on applicable models.
