Choosing Switches for Truck Cab Panels

Switch selection depends on the circuit to be controlled and the panel format. Rocker switches are the most common format for fixed panel mounting and are available in a wide range of current ratings from 10A through to 30A. Push-pull switches suit applications where a positive pull action is preferred over a toggle. LED illuminated switches make circuit status immediately visible and are preferred for multi-switch panels where driver identification of active circuits is important.

What current rating do I need for a rocker switch in a truck?

The switch current rating must exceed the maximum current drawn by the circuit it controls. For most cab auxiliary circuits such as work lights, fans and accessories, a 20A or 30A switch provides adequate headroom. For higher-load circuits such as driving lights or PTO-controlled equipment, confirm the circuit current and select a switch with a rating 25% above the maximum load.

Are these switches suitable for 24V commercial vehicle systems?

Yes. Truckstop stocks switches specifically rated for 24V applications as well as 12V. A 12V switch must not be used on a 24V circuit; the higher voltage will exceed the switch's rated capacity and cause premature failure or arcing. Always confirm the voltage rating on the product specification before purchasing.

Do you stock panel-mount and surface-mount switch options?

Yes. Both panel-mount (flush fitting) and surface-mount switch options are available. Panel-mount rocker switches fit into standard 12mm, 19mm or 20mm cutouts depending on the switch body size. Surface-mount options are suitable where panel drilling is not practical or where the switch is being added to an existing installation.
