Splashproof switches for commercial vehicle and trailer installations

A standard automotive switch is not rated for exposure to water. Fitting one in a location subject to rain, wash-down water, or condensation will cause corrosion of the contacts and premature failure. Splashproof switches - rated to IP54 as a minimum - are designed for exactly those environments: external trailer panels, tipper cab controls, wash-down equipment, and any application where the switch mounting position cannot be fully protected from moisture.

IP54 means the switch is protected against dust ingress and water splashing from any direction. IP65 adds full dust-tight protection and resistance to water jets - the correct specification for pressure wash-down environments or direct rain exposure on trailer bodywork. Look for splashproof switches that are also rated for the operating temperature range of the installation environment, particularly for external switches on refrigerated trailers where temperatures well below ambient are normal.

Frequently asked questions

What IP rating do I need for a switch mounted on the outside of a trailer?

IP65 is the recommended minimum for externally mounted switches on trailer bodywork. IP65 provides full dust-tight protection and resistance to water jets from any direction - covering rain, wash-down operations, and spray during transit. IP54 is adequate for partially sheltered external positions but not for direct exposure to water jets.

Can I use a splashproof switch in a refrigerated trailer environment?

Yes, provided the switch's operating temperature range covers the minimum temperature of the installation environment. Standard IP65 switches are typically rated to -25 degrees C, which covers most ambient cold-store and refrigerated trailer environments.

Do splashproof switches require a different panel cutout to standard switches?

Splashproof switch bodies are often slightly larger than equivalent non-sealed switches due to the sealing arrangements around the panel cutout. Check the product specification for the required panel cutout size and mounting depth before drilling. Many splashproof switches also include a mounting gasket that must be correctly seated to maintain the IP rating.

Are splashproof switches available in both toggle and push button formats?

Yes. Splashproof versions are available in toggle, push button, and rocker switch formats. The IP rating is a function of the sealing around the actuator and the body, not the actuator type. Check that the specific switch format you need is available in the IP rating required for your application.
